Muslims perform Hajj to the Sacred House of Allah in obedience to His command, seeking His forgiveness and pleasure, and aspiring to fulfil the fifth pillar of Islam. Allah has designated it as a season for shedding sins and drawing closer to Him through obedience and submission.
They stand at Arafat, circumambulate the Ancient House (the Kaaba), and pace between Safa and Marwa, answering the call of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and responding to the invitation of Truth.
"And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House — for whoever is able to find thereto a way."
— Surah Aal-E-Imran (3:97), The Noble Quran"Whoever performs Hajj and does not utter any obscenity or commit any sin, will return [as sinless] as the day his mother gave birth to him."
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Bukhari & Muslim)The profound rewards and blessings that make Hajj the journey of a lifetime.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "An accepted Hajj will receive no less a reward than Paradise." An accepted pilgrimage means its expense is from lawfully earned money, the pilgrim goes repenting, shunning immorality and argument, and fulfils all pillars of Hajj.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever performs Hajj and does not have sexual relations, sins, or disputes unjustly, shall return from Hajj as pure and free from sins as on the day on which his mother gave birth to him."
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Make the Hajj and the Umrah follow one another closely, for they remove poverty and sins as a blacksmith's bellows remove impurities from iron, gold, and silver."
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The safety of three kinds of people is guaranteed by Allah — one of them is a man who made a journey for Hajj." Allah personally guarantees the safety and protection of the sincere pilgrim.
These four acts are obligatory pillars — Hajj is invalid without any of them.
Upon entering the state of Ihram, the intention to perform the ritual begins in the heart. It may be articulated on the tongue, saying: "Labbayka Allahumma Hajjan" (O Allah, Here I am intending to perform Hajj). Men wear two white unsewn sheets; women wear modest regular clothing.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no day when Allah sets free more servants from Hell than the Day of Arafah. He draws near, then praises them to the angels, saying: What do these want?" Standing here from noon to sunset on 9th Dhul-Hijjah is the essential pillar of Hajj.
Allah the Almighty said: "Then let them end their untidiness and fulfil their vows and perform Tawaf around the ancient House." This is the circumambulation of the Kaaba performed on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah after returning from Mina — an obligatory pillar.
Allah said: "Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs Umrah — there is no blame upon him for walking between them." Walking seven times between Safa and Marwah is obligatory.
The appointed boundary points for entering Ihram before reaching Makkah — and the three types of Hajj pilgrimage.
Enter Ihram for Umrah from the Miqaat → complete Umrah → exit Ihram → re-enter Ihram for Hajj from Makkah on the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah. This is the most common mode for pilgrims from India and Tamil Nadu. Requires an animal sacrifice (Hady).
Enter Ihram for Hajj only from the Miqaat. No Umrah is performed during this trip, and no sacrifice is required. Suitable for those who have previously performed Umrah or are performing Hajj without combining it with Umrah.
Enter Ihram for both Hajj and Umrah together from the Miqaat in a single intention. The pilgrim follows Hajj rituals throughout without exiting Ihram. Requires a sacrifice. Suitable for those unable to re-enter Ihram or with certain health constraints.

Each ritual of Hajj carries centuries of history, spiritual meaning and divine wisdom.
The heart of Hajj is the Kaaba — the sacred cube inside Al-Masjid Al-Haram. Pilgrims circumambulate it seven times counterclockwise, symbolising the unity of the Muslim ummah and absolute devotion to Allah. Each circuit begins and ends at the Black Stone (Hajar Al-Aswad).
Tawaf Al-Qudum: Arrival Tawaf when first entering Makkah.
Tawaf Al-Ifadhah: The obligatory Hajj Tawaf on 10th Dhul-Hijjah — a Pillar of Hajj.
Tawaf Al-Wadaa: Farewell Tawaf before leaving Makkah.
Pilgrims walk or run seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating Hagar (Hajar AS) who desperately searched for water for her infant Isma'il. One trip (Safa to Marwah or back) counts as one of seven. This act of devotion and absolute trust in Allah is now a pillar of Hajj.
As Hagar ran in desperation between the hills, Angel Jibreel struck the ground and the blessed Zamzam spring burst forth — flowing for over 4,000 years without stopping. Pilgrims drink this blessed water throughout Hajj and Umrah. It is considered healing and spiritually nourishing by the Prophet ﷺ.
On the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah at the plain of Arafat, pilgrims gather from noon to sunset in prayer and supplication. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Hajj is Arafat" — meaning standing here is the essential pillar. Missing this standing makes the Hajj invalid.
Every pilgrim — king or labourer — wears the same white Ihram at Arafat. No status, no wealth, no nationality matters. This is one of Islam's most powerful expressions of universal brotherhood. All stand equal before their Creator, seeking the same forgiveness and mercy.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best du'a is the du'a of Arafat." On this day, Allah descends to the lowest heaven and forgives pilgrims who sincerely repent. Make abundant du'a for yourself, family and the entire Muslim ummah.
After sunset on the 9th, pilgrims travel from Arafat to Muzdalifah. Maghrib and Isha prayers are combined and shortened here. Pilgrims sleep under the open sky — a unique, humbling experience connecting them to the earliest pilgrims of Islam. Fajr prayer is performed here before moving to Mina.
At Muzdalifah, collect 49 pebbles minimum (70 if staying all Tashreeq days). Each should be small — about chickpea-sized. These will be used to stone the three Jamarat pillars in Mina, symbolically rejecting Satan's temptations as Prophet Ibrahim (AS) did in this very location.
At the Jamarat bridge in Mina, stone three pillars — Sughra, Wusta and Aqabah — with seven pebbles each, reciting "Allahu Akbar" with each throw. Jamrat Al-Aqabah (largest) is stoned on Eid Day first. All three are stoned on the 11th and 12th (and optionally 13th) of Dhul-Hijjah.
On Eid Al-Adha (10th Dhul-Hijjah), pilgrims sacrifice an animal — sheep, goat, cow or camel. This honours Prophet Ibrahim's (AS) readiness to sacrifice his son Isma'il out of absolute faith. Allah replaced the sacrifice with a ram, and this act of devotion is commemorated every year worldwide.
The sacrifice is deeply communal — meat is divided in three portions: one for the pilgrim's family, one for relatives and friends, one for those in need. This reflects Islam's values of generosity and compassion for the poor. The same spirit of sharing is observed by Muslims worldwide on Eid Al-Adha.
After sacrifice, men shave their heads (Halq — preferred, more reward) or trim their hair (Taqsir). Women cut a small portion only. This marks partial release from Ihram restrictions — regular clothing may be worn. Full exit from Ihram comes only after Tawaf Al-Ifadhah and Sa'i in Makkah.
Ihram is the sacred state of ritual consecration assumed before Hajj or Umrah. Men wear two white unsewn sheets — the upper Rida and lower Izar. Women wear modest regular clothing covering all except face and hands. Pilgrims enter Ihram at the Miqaat, reciting the Talbiyah sincerely.
Umrah first → exit Ihram → re-enter for Hajj from Makkah on 8th Dhul-Hijjah. Easiest and most common. Requires sacrifice.
Hajj only — one Ihram from Miqaat. No sacrifice required. For those performing Hajj without Umrah.
Hajj and Umrah together in one Ihram. Follows Hajj rituals throughout. Requires sacrifice.
